St Helena International Airport represents a historic milestone for one of the most remote islands in the world. In a bid to unlock significant economic potential, access and tourism -the St Helena Government and the Department for International Development (a UK Government Department) has allocated more than R3 billion for the development of the airport.

St Helena Airport is the biggest design, build, operate and transfer project that the UK government has ever signed and represents one of the largest construction projects awarded to South African Construction Group, Basil Read.

Following the four-year design and build phase of this project, the operations phase of the airport contract will continue in partnership with Lanseria Airport for a period of 10 years.

The scope of construction work entails:

  • a 1850m concrete runway with taxiway and apron to cater for aircraft up to the size of an Airbus A320 & Boeing 737-800;

  • approximately 8 million m3 rockfill embankment through which a 750m long reinforced concrete culvert will run;

  • an airport terminal building of 3500m2 and support infrastructure;

  • air traffic control and safety;

  • bulk fuel installation for 6 million litres of diesel and aviation fuel;

  • a 14km airport access road, and all related logistics.
